In-House Employment History
A) September 1999 - December 2001 Commissioning Editor, Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers

I commissioned and coordinated the publication of large, multi-contributor reference works. After completing my predecessor's project, the Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition (2 vols, 1900 pages, 1.2 million words in 1000 entries by 280 contributors), I commissioned three new projects, an Encyclopedia of the Arctic (3 vols, 2134 pages, 1.5 million words in 1200 entries, 370 contributors: www.routledge-ny.com/ref/arctic/index.html), an Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography (1 vol., 1100 pages, 800,000 words in 800 entries, 200 contributors), and an Encyclopedia of Chamber Music (projected to be 3 vols, 2400 pages, 1.6 million words in 650 entries, illustrated with music examples, about 350 contributors).

This involved initiating and researching the concept for the book, finding an editor in the field to work with, finding the potential contributors (about 1500 for each book), writing the background and briefing material for the project web pages, working with picture editors, illustrators, and typesetters, and tracking all the elements of the encyclopedias through their many stages on a large, multi-table Access database - and doing this simultaneously for different projects at different stages of development, across a wide range of subjects.

B) 1994-1999 Senior Media Editor, Encarta Encyclopedia (World English Edition)

This post had two main components:

i) Commissioning and editing new articles for the encyclopedia

  • Researching categories and identifying new articles needed.

  • Briefing and commissioning authors.

  • Editing text on screen.

  • Maintenance of multi-table database of articles.

  • Some of the major articles I have commissioned include:

History of Cartography from David Woodward (author of Chicago University Press's multi-volume History of Cartography series)

Photography and History of Photographic Techniques from Philippe Garner (senior director of Sotheby's)

Environmentalism from Sara Parkin (director of Forum for the Future)

Musicology from Claude Palisca (Emeritus Professor of Music at Yale)

Geographical Exploration - a joint article taking different angles on the subject from John Hemming of the Royal Geographical Society and Tim Severin, the traveller who has recreated historical journeys such as the voyage of St Brendan.

ii) Briefing and commissioning new multimedia items for the encyclopedia

  • Selection of music audio clips and supervision of recording of spoken audio.

  • Briefing artists for production of illustrations, diagrams, maps etc.

  • Maintaining and troubleshooting active database of media records.

C) 1989-1994 Editor, Novello & Co (music publishers)

This post with a major music publisher involved:

  • making layouts of publications that integrate text, music, and illustrations.

  • preparing manuscripts for origination, proof-reading the originated music and editing and proof-reading all related text matter, including multi-language editions.

  • manuscript assessment and cover design.

  • standardizing various aspects of musical notation and the presentation of text material in order to maintain and develop a consistent house-style in work produced by many different originators.

D) 1985-1989 Editorial Assistant, Stainer & Bell Ltd (music publishers)

This involved much of the same editorial work as at Novello, but also included a thorough basic training in many aspects of publishing, including production and printing techniques.
